Robin Wright, who played the role of Antiope in the DC Extended Universe, has expressed her interest in reprising her character in the upcoming Wonder Woman prequel series titled Paradise Lost. The series is set to air on HBO Max as one of the first projects of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe plans.
In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Wright shared her excitement about the upcoming series and expressed her desire to return to the role of Antiope. “I loved playing an Amazon,” Wright said. “I kinda feel like I was the leader of an Amazon tribe in my past life. I haven’t received that call [about ‘Paradise Lost’] yet. Maybe I’m too old!”
Wright, who is currently 55 years old, played the role of Antiope in the fist Wonder Woman movie and its sequel. Her character was the fierce and formidable aunt of Wonder Woman, who trained her in combat on the island of Themyscira.
DC Studios is looking to expand the Wonder Woman mythos with Paradise Lost. The series, which is currently in development, is said to be a Game of Thrones-type story about the Amazons living in Themiscyra, the home of Wonder Woman.
The Paradise Lost series promises to explore the rich history and culture of the Amazons and how they came to be the fierce warriors that they are known as. It will give fans a chance to delve deeper into the world of Wonder Woman, and see how her backstory and history is linked to that of her fellow Amazons.
Wonder Woman has been a major box-office draw for DC. Her 2017 film, directed by Patty Jenkins, earned more than $820 million worldwide and received critical acclaim for its portrayal of the DC Comics character, played by Gal Gadot. A sequel, titled Wonder Woman 1984, was released in 2020, but failed to reach the same heights as its predecessor due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
